Argentine President Javier Millay stated yesterday (Tuesday) that he intends to fire about 70,000 government employees in the coming months, as part of the “chainsaw” policy he is promoting, which aims to balance the country’s economy at any cost. The libertarian president spoke at a political event and boasted that he had frozen public works, cut off funding to local governments and canceled more than 200,000 social welfare programs, which he described as corrupt.

In his speech that lasted about an hour, Millay referred to the erosion of salaries and pensions in Argentina as a result of annual inflation of about 276%. Millay’s cuts are expected to provoke the opposition of the powerful labor unions and endanger his high percentage of support. In Argentina, out of a population of 45 million people, about 3.5 million work in the public sector.

Already yesterday, one of the largest labor unions announced a strike, while a government report found that since Mieli was elected to office four months ago, private sector workers have suffered the largest pay cut in the last three decades.

In his speech, Millay cited polls showing that Argentines are optimistic about the future of the economy. This, against the background of a survey on an increase in public trust in the government, despite its massive cutbacks. “People have hope, they see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Miley said.

In December, Javier Millay was sworn in as President of Argentina, after a sweeping victory in the elections. Millay came to power against the backdrop of a very heavy economic crisis in the country, while promising to reduce government offices, lay off employees in the public sector in order to cut government spending. During the election campaign, Millay was recorded with a chainsaw in the heart of the crowd – as a symbol of his intention to reduce expenses.
