WhatsApp Overhaul Planned for 2026: Privacy, Control, and a Shift Away From Phone Numbers
Table of Contents
WhatsApp is preparing a significant app redesign slated for 2026, promising users enhanced control over their data, improved storage management, and greater privacy – though not without the removal of some existing features. The changes, announced as the year draws to a close, represent a major evolution for the messaging giant.
Enhanced Device Management and Storage Control
Since November 2025, WhatsApp has been available as a standalone app on the Apple Watch. A forthcoming update will introduce greater transparency regarding connected devices. A beta version for iOS now displays a comprehensive overview of all devices linked to a WhatsApp account, including peripherals like the Apple Watch, showing the device name and last activity timestamp. Device connections will occur automatically, eliminating the need for QR codes, and removal will only be possible by uninstalling the app.
Alongside this, WhatsApp is improving storage management for iOS users. They will soon be able to selectively delete specific media types or individual messages within chats without resorting to deleting entire conversation histories.
Username System and the Ban on External AI
One of the most substantial changes coming in 2026 is the introduction of usernames as an alternative to phone numbers for identification. This new system, dubbed “BSUID,” is designed to bolster user privacy, particularly when interacting with businesses. Companies will be required to adopt this new format by June 2026.
However, the update also brings restrictions. Starting January 15, 2026, the use of external artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT or Copilot within WhatsApp will be prohibited. Meta will exclusively allow its own Meta AI within the messaging platform.
Advertising and Festive Features
The future of advertising on WhatsApp is also evolving. Following a temporary block imposed by the European Union in the summer of 2025, WhatsApp may introduce advertisements in the status area in 2026, contingent upon explicit user consent for data sharing with Facebook and Instagram.
To mark the transition into the new year, WhatsApp is activating festive extras. Reactions using party emojis will trigger animated confetti explosions, accompanied by new stickers and video effects such as fireworks and stars. These animations will disappear shortly after New Year’s Day.
