Bizarre incident in the ice hockey league: During a game in Essen, the Hammer Eisbären were robbed on a large scale. As a result, they didn’t come back onto the ice.
A major league ice hockey game between the Moskitos Essen and the Hammer Eisbären ended abruptly and unexpectedly on Monday evening. After an exciting game in which the Mosquitoes led 5-3 at the second break, the Eisbären players never returned to the ice. The reason for this was a theft in their dressing room during the game, as the “WAZ” reports.
The police were informed immediately and dispatched emergency services to the ice rink at Westbahnhof. “We were informed yesterday that there had been a theft in the area of the guest cabin. We then sent emergency resources, the result is a criminal complaint,” explained the Essen police control center on Tuesday morning when asked by this editorial team.
According to the police, there are currently no indications of suspects. A criminal complaint was filed with several victims, but no information could be given about the exact number of valuables stolen. The only thing that is certain is that more than one smartphone was stolen. This is now being further investigated by the criminal police.
The incident sparked mixed reactions from fans. While some Mosquito supporters chanted, “Hey, we want to see the Polar Bears,” they remained in their cabin and decided against continuing the game. Even after an extension of the break and a two-minute penalty for delay of game, the team did not return to the ice.
At 9:10 p.m. the referees finally ended the game in accordance with the applicable rules. The Essen fans still used the demolition to celebrate and were already getting in the mood for the next derby: “Great food, great food!”
How the canceled game is evaluated and what happens next is now in the hands of the German Ice Hockey Association (DEB).
