Later he was commander in several military zones in Michoacán, Oaxaca and Puebla.

He was deputy chief and head of the second (intelligence), third (operations) and fourth (logistics) sections of the General Staff of the Presidency of the Secretariat of National Defense.

He was also military and air attaché at the Mexican Embassy in Chile.

Gerardo Mérida Sánchez was also Director of the Military Intelligence School, dependent on the Center for Studies of the Mexican Army and Air Force.
