Why plans for the new year are a good thing

There is magic in every beginning. The feeling of a tabula rasa, a blank white sheet of paper on which to plan the new year, gives the feeling of being in control of your life and of actually being able to plan. Provide structure.

And because positive sentences are always better than negative formulations, we do not intend to deny ourselves this and renounce that. Instead, we imagine what wonderful blossoms the new year will bring. What really matters to us, what is worth our time and effort. It’s like creating the most magnificent garden in your mind.

A garden called 2024. It is surrounded by a dense hedge of beech trees, which offers enough hatching space to hatch new ideas like blackbirds hatch their offspring. Here and there a hawthorn that keeps toxic people away, but whose red fruits speckle the dreary months.

An overgrown strip as a place for experiments

In the middle there is a wide lawn with space for many friends, new acquaintances, inspiring chance encounters, games and fun, joy and excess. Against the stress.

In one corner there are exotic flowers and exotic fruits. A long-distance trip in the new year is as unreasonable as exposing delicate tropical plants to the German climate. But also so beautiful! And you can protect the plants in winter, compensate for the CO2 emissions from air miles – and hope that everything will be fine, with the climate and everything.

This one overgrown strip where everything can grow and there is room for experiments should not be missed. Room for failure.

A vegetable patch for a healthier diet.

Long-term projects, planting flower bulbs in the fall so that a crocodile carpet spreads out in the spring of the year after next. Persevere and practice patience.

That’s going to be a lot of work. Do not plan in too much detail in order to provide fertile ground for surprises such as seeds blowing in. For nuts that little wizards called squirrels bury. For undigested seeds that the birds drop. Something wonderful can grow from crap, with a little faith.

A shed for some realism

A roundel made of paving stones, with a solid foundation, dandelions and daisies grow out of the cracks. There is also a seating area for relaxed meetings and valuable conversations with the family. According to a survey, almost two thirds of us want more time for family and friends.

A small fountain where fresh ideas bubble up.

The mixer sits around 364 days a year, while the sofa offends the eye every day and the faucet is just annoying. Luckily, the new year offers the editorial team the opportunity to finally fix a few annoyances at home.

Ursula Kals Published/Updated:

A shed, because we want to remain realistic, in which the unfinished projects are located. The birdhouse urgently needs a new roof. All the little things that are guaranteed, really, promised, can still be used can go in there. The two chair legs will certainly still be very important in the future, even central to the next project, which is guaranteed, really, promised to be completed. There are old items in the shed next to the tools. A garden like this is of course a lot of work.

The main thing is to make something happen

The tools are tools collected from parents, from childhood, and therapists may also have contributed something.

A bed where we do something for the first time.

A niche with tall sunflowers that are so close together that you can’t see what’s coming after three or four rows. Is anything coming except more sunflowers? A secret hiding place, a refuge for unobserved me-time. Space for secrets.

But back to reality. Because resolutions are a popular topic of small talk, you should just have something in mind for fleeting encounters. Start playing Candycrush again after years and beat your personal high score. The main thing is to make something happen.
