In 2022, Kevin Kühnert made his relationship public. However, it is not known who the politician is dating – and it should stay that way.

“See you,” Kevin Kühnert wrote on Instagram on Monday afternoon. The SPD general secretary published a two-page statement in which he announced his withdrawal from politics. He resigned from office at the age of 35.

He also no longer wants to run for the federal election next year. “These decisions took me a lot of effort and they hurt me because I put my heart and soul into my political work,” said Kühnert.

But the politician is struggling with health problems. “I need the energy that is necessary for my office and an election campaign in the foreseeable future in order to get healthy again. That’s why I’m drawing the conclusions.” At the end of the statement, Kühnert thanks the members of the SPD. He doesn’t mention his family. The 35-year-old keeps his private life completely out of the public eye.

In 2022, however, the politician consciously spoke about his relationship for the first time. “I have a partner,” he told the magazine “Bunte” two years ago. Even back then, Kühnert also mentioned that he would never show his friend in public.

Couples’ appearances are out of the question, especially not “at the clichéd occasions such as the Bayreuth Festival or the Federal Press Ball, where others present their partners.” At the Bayreuth Festival, for example, Christian Lindner appeared with Franca Lehfeldt for the first time. The couple is now married.

Even though Kevin Kühnert won’t show up with his partner, he wanted to make the relationship public to set an example for young people. “I know that, especially in some villages, some people will still be kicked out of their homes in 2022 if they reveal their sexual orientation,” Kühnert said at the time. “These young people need role models and they need to know that it’s okay to love a man or woman of the same sex.”

A few weeks ago, the politician also revealed that he not only keeps his partner secret in the spotlight, but also when they are out together privately in public. He told the Welt television station in August that he was reluctant to walk through the city hand in hand with his friend for fear of violent attacks.

“We ourselves still have this ulterior motive that we would rather look around twice, rather check the situation again,” says Kühnert. “Unfortunately, statistics show that this violence exists; it has also increased recently.” Homophobia is a reality in society.

And even two years later, the politician stands behind the decision: “There are no photos, and it will stay that way.” His partner consciously decided not to be part of public life. “My partner is not a sidecar of mine who comes to the public to present himself, so to speak, but he is an independent person.”
