Day by day the traffic congestion in Chennai city is increasing. Due to this, works like flyover and road widening are being carried out. On that basis, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Corporation has planned to widen 7 major roads in Chennai to avoid traffic congestion.

Namely Sardar Patel Road between Anna Road-Central Kailash for a distance of 3 km, Panthian Road-Ethiraj Road for a distance of 0.72 meters, Kilpakkam Tailors Road-Annanagar First Main Road for a distance of 1.4 km, Nelson Manickam Road-Valluvar Kottam Road. 7 roads are to be widened namely Tank Bund Road which is 1.1 km away, Creams Road which is 1.3 km away from Anna Road-Panthian Road, New Avadi Road which is 1.3 km away and Perambur Barracks Road which is 1.5 km away.

As for Sardar Patel Road, it is currently 20 meters (65 feet) wide. It is widened to 30.5 meters (100 feet). Similarly, Ethiraj Road, Kilpakkam Garden Road, Tank Bund Road, Creams Road, New Avadi Road will be widened up to 18 meters (59 feet).

It has been decided to widen the Perambur Barracks Road to 24 meters (78 feet). An official of Metropolitan Chennai Development Board said:-

This road expansion is being done to reduce traffic congestion and connect the roads in the respective areas with the metro rail stations. An advisory committee has been appointed to prepare a detailed report on this road expansion.

The committee will study the works to identify the possible improvements to carry out the road widening, such as land required for road widening, acquisition of buildings, demolition of acquired buildings, deciding how much compensation should be paid to those places and buildings, removal of existing trees in the area to be widened.

The advisory committee will submit the report in a month. After that, the necessary sites for road expansion will be acquired and the expansion work will start. The widening will be done at a newly determined width excluding the existing pedestrian platform.

Similarly, there is a plan to connect the village roads near Chennai with the outer ring roads. In the first phase, villages in Seemapuram and Thirumudivakkam areas will be connected to the outer ring road.
