A virtuous wife is the best asset for her husband in this worldly life. Allah Ta’ala has anointed women with an unparalleled dignity and rights in all aspects of life. Islam has given respect, dignity and basic rights to women as well as men to conduct their lives through the specific principles of the Qur’an. Therefore, there is no alternative way to get proper status and rights of women except to follow the rules of Islam. Allah Ta’ala has instructed and advised men to live with women in this sense-
وَ عَشْرُوْهُنَّ بِالْمَعُرُوروفِ ۚ فَن كرهتمُوْهُنَ فَاسِي َن تَكَرُُوُُوُْ ُوِــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ,
‘And live with them (wives) honestly; If you hate them, So it could be that, Allah has placed great blessings, You hate him.’ (Surah Nisa: Verse 19)
The best wealth in the world for a husband is a virtuous wife. Although the word is small, its significance is huge. A man’s life is not complete without the touch of a woman. Women are his life partner in happiness and sadness. So, if this woman is pure and virtuous in married life, then life becomes heaven. Even in a troubled life, the fruits of peace flow.
Peace in married life begins with the married life of man and woman. A virtuous wife is very important in married life. Therefore, Islam has given the highest status to the wife. The statements of the Qur’an hadith about women’s rights in married life are highlighted:
১. A woman in the status of a wife
Before the advent of Islam women were considered the property of men without marital ties and a man could marry as he pleased. Islam makes marriage legal and compulsory for women. By marriage a woman is elevated to a seat of honour. Allah says, ‘And give in marriage to those among you men and women who spend their lives without marriage.’
২. Mohr is the right of women
Mohr is a guarantee of women’s dignity. In the pre-Islamic era, women did not get the right to dowry for their marriage. Islam introduced the provision of dowry to protect the dignity of women. Dowry has been made obligatory on the husband.
Even if wives are given large wealth as dowry, it cannot be taken back. Because the dowry is a condition of marriage, it becomes the property of the woman. Allah says:
‘And give the wives their dowry happily. If they leave (some) part of it with pleasure, enjoy it comfortably.’ (Surah Nisa: Verse 4)
3. Women in married life
Men and women accept each other’s favors by determining the dowry. A man takes a woman as his wife. Islam has given women a unique status as wives for men. Therefore Allah Ta’ala instructs the husband to treat his wife well and says-
> And live with them with their wives
‘And live with them (wives) honestly.’ (Surah Nisa: Verse 19)
> In order to be happy in family life, the Almighty says elsewhere-
They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.
‘They are clothes for you and you are clothes for them.’ (Surah Baqarah: Verse 187)
> Allah says about the rights of the wife towards her husband, ‘Men have rights over women just as women have rights over men.’
4. Duty to women as a wife
After a woman acquires the status of a wife through marriage, the man has to fulfill the responsibility of taking care of all the needs of the woman. This includes his food, clothing, medical treatment, shelter, ornaments etc. Allah says:
‘Men are protectors and managers of women because Allah has exalted one of them above the other. And also because men spend their wealth on them.’ (Surah Nisa)
