The decline of wild animals rarely makes the news, but it continues. The Living Planet report, which the WWF publishes every two years, shows an average decline of 73% in the size of wild vertebrate populations between 1970 and 2020. The indicator, developed by the NGO with the contribution of the Zoological Society of London, is based on the results of scientific studies conducted around the world. This year, monitoring covers nearly 35,000 populations of 5,500 species of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. A 69% decline was reported in 2022.
