Wind, rain, snow, waves: vigilance throughout France, 17 departments on alert

by time news

The winter weather continues and rages throughout France on Tuesday. Météo France places 17 departments on orange vigilance (level 3 out of 4). All the others are affected by yellow vigilance (level 2 out of 4).

The reasons vary according to the regions: wind, rain, flood, snow, ice, submersive waves. These different maps make it possible to visualize the areas concerned by each type of bad weather.

Gust of wind at nearly 140 km / h. Landes, Gers, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées are on orange alert. Météo France explains that “the westerly and southwesterly wind strengthens strongly as the Fien disturbance passes”. Inland, “the strongest gusts can reach 90 km / h to 100 km / h, locally 110 km / h”. On the coasts, even more important gusts occur. 137 km / h were thus recorded in Socoa, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

This table drawn up by The Weather Channel shows that the wind, for example, blew at more than 100 km / h in Biarritz, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques as well.

“With the evacuation to the east of the low pressure center, the gusts are weakening” in the morning, according to the meteorological organization.

Significant accumulations of rain in the South-West and in Corsica. Precipitation can be locally significant in 24 hours in these two parts of the territory. Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse are on orange alert.

In the Southwest, until next night, it should fall between 40 mm and 60 mm, locally 80 mm, or up to 80 liters per square meter. “The south of the Landes, the Basque Country and the Béarnaise plains are mainly affected by these strong accumulations. »

In Corsica, the rains “intensify from the start of the day” in the West. “Precipitation locally takes on a stormy character with hourly totals reaching 15/25 mm”, up to 25 liters per square meter. “Over the whole day, the accumulations reach 50 mm to 100 mm on the relief, locally 120/140 mm”, that is to say up to 140 liters per square meter.

Be careful at the seaside because of a strong swell. Météo France warns that “a powerful swell first reaches the western side of Corsica at the end of the morning, then the western coast of the Var at the start of the afternoon, areas placed in orange vigilance. “In southern Corsica, the Gulf of Ajaccio will be particularly vulnerable, as well as, in the Var, the bays of Bandol and Sanary. “ “The maximum intensity is expected in the afternoon and evening for the Var, between this afternoon and Wednesday morning for Southern Corsica. »

Caution is also required in the departments of Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-Maritimes (in particular from Nice to Menton), Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes and Gironde, placed in yellow vigilance.

Snow in the Alps, in Burgundy, in the Massif Central, but also in Normandy and in the south of Ile-de-France. Ten departments are on orange alert due to snow and ice: Ain, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Isère, Cantal, Lozère, Yonne, Côte-d’Or, Haute-Marne, Aube.

In the Massif Central, up to 30 cm of cumulation is expected locally. The falls “will be accompanied by snowdrifts with wind gusts of 80 km/h to 90 km/h”.

In the Northern Alps, the rain-snow limit goes down to “very low altitude”.

In the Northeast, “the rain is quickly replaced by snow to the plain”. The snowfall will last until the end of the next night. The accumulation will reach 5 cm, locally 10 cm.

In addition, “snowfall is expected from Normandy to the Paris basin. They will generally give small quantities, but we cannot exclude reaching a few centimeters very locally,” warns Meteo France. In the case of Ile-de-France, it is the south of the region that would be concerned.

Finally, next night, “significant snowfall could be organized towards the Creuse and the Allier, then shift towards the south-east”.
