Only cash is true – as is well known, the ÖVP and FPÖ have conspired to this popular wisdom. Their suggestion of even anchoring cash in the constitution sparked one of the political summer slump debates. Now the Social Democrats are jumping on this train, albeit on a different wagon: They want to ask the Landesbank to pay.

The SPÖ has repeatedly called for an ATM in every municipality in Lower Austria. What is new, however, is that they also provide a financing proposal. The comrades counted that there is no cash dispenser in almost 100 communities. The Hypo should step in in these places, SPÖ chairman Sven Hergovich suggests: “Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner should give herself a push and make it possible. After all, she is the owner’s representative of the Landesbank, where excess profits have been bubbling up recently.” Hergovich refers to the 51 million euros that the institute raked in in the first half of the year. And he cites Great Britain as a role model, where banks have to ensure that if they are threatened with punishment, that citizens near their place of residence can withdraw money free of charge. The distance is one mile (1.6 kilometers) in the cities, three miles in the country. “Don’t need any clever ideas” The reply from the ÖVP headquarters in St. Pölten is sharp: 95 percent of the population would be within a radius of five kilometers an ATM, on average it is even only 1.5 kilometers. “Anyone who clumsily ‘More, more more!’ screams, doesn’t want to deal with facts,” counters club boss Jochen Danninger. And adds: “The compatriots themselves know how to get their cash. They don’t need smart-ass ideas from Sven Hergovich for that.” The Freedom Party sees the supply of cash as a “clear task that the banks have to fulfill”. They refer to their petition on the subject of “Fortress Cash”.
