Campo Grande does not have a doctor who can perform the procedure, and Sesau says he will hire

Speaking on social networks that she would undergo surgery to treat endometriosis, about a year ago, singer Anitta surprised those who did not know about the health problem. The famous woman underwent the surgical procedure at the Vila Nova Star Hospital, a private hospital in São Paulo (SP).

Without fame, health insurance or extra money, the reality of saleswoman Taigla Anaeth Rocha is different. A resident of a popular condominium in Bairro Jardim Campo Nobre, in Campo Grande, she has lost count of how many times she has left home to go to an UPA (Emergency Care Unit) or a hospital emergency room.

“It’s like feeling the labor contractions 24 hours a day, without being pregnant”, describes the Campo Grande woman about the worst symptom. The pains intensify in the premenstrual period and prevent her from getting out of bed and doing simple things, like making coffee.

Taigla is 30 years old. The last registered job had to be abandoned because of the crippling pain. “It was a great company, a very good salary and I had wonderful colleagues. I had to tell my boss that, unfortunately, I was going to resign. In the first month, I missed days because of the contractions and it was impossible to work”, he laments. Currently, she works informally selling kitchen utensils.

Being menstruating for more than two weeks and having difficulty doing physiological needs are other implications of the disease that prevent full access to the job market. “I just want to have a normal life and be able to leave the house in peace”, wishes Taigla. She does not consider trying to retire.

Her husband is also an informal worker. She does general services and maintenance in schools and homes. The two raise two children together, who are 11 and 5 years old.

Sem specialist not SUS – On a gravity scale, the Campo Grande saleswoman’s endometriosis can be considered worse than Anitta’s, as it is at a deep level. “That means that it has already reached many organs”, explains the patient herself.

The disease occurs when tissue cells lining the uterus (endometrium), instead of being expelled during menstruation, fall into the ovaries or abdominal cavity, multiplying again and bleeding abnormally. The reasons for this are not defined.

Surgery is also the most suitable treatment for Taigla’s deep endometriosis, as the disease has already compromised part of the seller’s ovaries, intestines and rectum. She discovered this in an MRI that cost around R$500 and was paid for thanks to a raffle.

She was even referred to surgery at the Regional Hospital of Mato Grosso do Sul, where she would undergo the procedure by the SUS (Unified Health System). “But the doctor who assisted me said that no public hospital in Campo Grande has a specialist in deep endometriosis to perform the surgery, which is no use”, she reports.

There was an attempt, according to Taigla, for the demand to be received by another hospital. “But there is no specialist either. I was even taken out of the regulatory system,” she said.

Sesau (Municipal Health Secretariat) admitted that Campo Grande was left without the professional due to the disconnection of the only existing one. In a note, he said he will provide.

“The procedure was performed exclusively at the Regional Hospital, having been suspended due to the resignation of the only professional who performed the surgeries. Sensitive to the needs of the population, the Municipal Health Department is negotiating with the hospital to hire a new professional who can offer the service contracted by the municipality”, pointed out in a note to Sesau.

More than 200 women – Taigla filed a lawsuit, with the support of the Mato Grosso do Sul Public Defender’s Office, to be able to perform the surgery urgently. “Even if it is in another state. All I need is to do it soon”, he appeals. The closest place with care via SUS, according to the agency informed her, would be Ribeirão Preto (SP).

A piece of data passed on to the patient during the consultation at the Ombudsman’s Office is that another 200 women are in the same situation, awaiting surgery whose specialist is not available in the Capital. Asked if this is the estimate of patients waiting for surgery, Sesau did not respond.

“A state of this size even has a ‘Pantanal aquarium’, but it doesn’t have a specialist surgeon in deep endometriosis!”

Late diagnosis – Taigla also complains about the unpreparedness of doctors to diagnose endometriosis. It was her case.

“In my adolescence and early adulthood, I already had abnormal symptoms in the menstrual period, so much so that I cried in pain. I bled during both pregnancies, and no doctor suspected that it could be because of endometriosis”, she recalls.

Discovered late, that’s when the disease ended up getting worse and reaching the organs. “There should be greater attention to women’s health, to take care of their health from an early age and not reach that point”, asks Taigla.
