KAMPALA, Uganda, February 8, 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/-Uganda has taken an important step towards creating a circular economy to drive sustainable growth and green industrialization, in line with its national program called “Vision 2040”.

With the support of the African Development Bank, the country launched the process of its roadmap for the circular economy on January 31, 2024 in Kampala. Representatives of the government and the African Development Bank were present in the Ugandan capital.

This initiative, implemented jointly with the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA) and supported by the Bank’s African Circular Economy Facility (ACEF), will mobilize government decision-makers, businesses and organizations across the civil society in efforts to fully harness the potential of circularity to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and climate action.

The African Development Bank supports the implementation of Uganda’s Green Growth Development Strategy to ensure inclusive socio-economic development and growth, including job creation, while protecting the country’s natural capital and combating the effects of climate change.

The country’s seven million young people are among those who stand to benefit the most from the creation of green jobs. The transition to a circular economy is also expected to boost household incomes.

Joshua Mutambi, Commissioner at the Uganda Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, who is leading the development of the National Circular Economy Roadmap, delivered the opening remarks at the launch. “Uganda, which is in the early stages of its industrialization, is privileged to follow a path of sustainable transition that allows us to avoid the consequences of resource-inefficient industrialization,” he said. -he declares.

“The circular economy roadmaps are political tools to direct investments towards efficient use of Africa’s natural assets, generating dividends for nature and people,” stressed, for his part, Anthony Nyong, Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the African Development Bank.

The development of the Uganda Circular Economy Roadmap is part of a multi-country ACEF program covering Ethiopia, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and Uganda.

ACEF is a multi-donor trust fund supported by the Finnish government and the Nordic Development Fund. It provides technical assistance to the public and private sectors to integrate the circular economy.

The circular economy roadmap process aligns with the African Development Bank Country Strategy Paper (CSP) 2022-2026 for Uganda. The DSP aims to create higher value-added jobs and reduce poverty. The process also advances the Bank’s Climate Change and Green Growth Action Plan for the period 2021-2025.

Support for circular economy policies is one of the pillars of the African Circular Economy Alliance(link is external) (ACEA), an initiative by African countries aimed at promoting circular practices in economic development , in line with the African Union Circular Economy Action Plan. The ACEA secretariat is hosted by the African Development Bank within the Climate Change and Green Growth Department.
