Switzerland conceded their third win in three Nations League games. Beaten by Denmark and Spain, they lost 2-0 in Leskovac against Serbia. This defeat seriously jeopardizes his chances of staying in Serie A.
Last in their group, who are now 4 points behind Serbia, it will be essential to beat Denmark on Tuesday in St Gallen to keep an eye on escaping direct relegation. The Danes won 1st place in the group for Spain for their part, which they won 1-0 in Murcia thanks to a feat from Martin Zubimendi.
Nico Elvedi’s own goal for the opener just before the break and Aleksandar Mitrovic’s almost unbelievable 2-0 showed the mistakes of a team that did not show all the necessary desire. Not forgetting the missed penalty from Breel Embolo in the 72nd which could have put them back on track.
Elvedi unhappy
Despite unchallenged dominance during the first twenty minutes and a golden opportunity for Breel Embolo in the 32nd minute, Switzerland were well behind at the break. This was due to sudden changes in concentration which cost Silvan Widmer and Nico Elvedi yellow cards and gave Michel Aebischer an unnecessary foul, leaving the free kick 1-0. Kicked by Lazar Samardzic, he finished his run in the basket after an unfortunate deflection from Elvedi.
Sent off in Copenhagen, the Mönchengladbach defender has had a difficult start to the season. Remaining on the bench throughout the Euros, he only had to take his place in Leskovac due to Denis Zakaria’s withdrawal. As he struggles in the duels, he is indeed the weak link in defense that certainly cannot offer the smallest cleanout to Gregor Kobel. For his 8th selection, the Zurich goalkeeper picked the ball back into his net at least once.
One possibility
But at the restart, it was he who saved the 2-0 after an error from Manuel Akanji. Kobel was able to win his duel against Luka Jovic and allow Switzerland to stay in the match. With the introduction of Fabian Rieder for Silvan Widmer to give Dan Ndoye the role of right winger, Murat Yakin took the first step to breathe new life into the team. In the 54th minute, Switzerland were in danger of a row with a shot from Xhaka which Predrag Rajkovic got out at the feet of Ndoye, however, which was offside. This was the only possibility given to the Swiss to come back to the level of the Serbians.
Already a scorer against Switzerland in 2018 in Kaliningrad and in 2022 in Doha, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored this time just after the hour mark with a wonderful goal. The former Fulham striker collected a loose ball down the left first time to set up Akanji before unleashing an unstoppable strike.
