A rapidly warming Asia; World Meteorological Center warning

The Asian region is warming faster than the global average, and economic losses from extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are expected to exceed USD 35 billion by 2021, including at least USD 7.5 billion in India, according to a new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). .

Asia’s average temperature in 2021 was 0.86°C higher than the average for the 1981–2010 period. The global average temperature in 2021 was about 0.42 degrees Celsius higher than the 1981-2010 period, according to WMO’s Asia Climate Report.

For regional warming, WMO does not use a pre-industrial reference period to measure temperature increase due to insufficient data. Temperature rises are instead compared to recent 30-year reference periods.

Bombing in Turkish capital; 6 people died

Police in the Turkish capital Istanbul arrested 46 people on Monday in connection with a bombing on the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, Istiklal Avenue, news agency Reuters reported. This includes Ahlam Albashir, a Syrian woman who is suspected of having planted the bomb.

During the initial investigation, police said the woman said she was trained by Kurdish fighters in Syria and entered Turkey through the Afrin region of northwestern Syria.

The explosion occurred around 4:13 pm (1313 GMT), killing six Turkish residents. Others on the busy street before the attack fled the scene as ambulances and police vans arrived.

Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu blamed Kurdish fighters from Kobani for the attack on Istanbul. “We have assessed that the instruction for the attack came from Kobani,” he said. Kobani is a city in northern Syria where Turkish forces have been conducting operations against the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia for the past years.
