Despite the best chances, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers started the Champions League with no points. However, they had a lot of bad luck at AS Roma.
The women of VfL Wolfsburg started the 2024/25 Champions League season with a defeat. At AS Roma, the Lower Saxony team lost 0:1 (0:1). Manuela Giugliano scored the goal of the day with a penalty in the 14th minute. Lynn Wilms had previously received the ball in the penalty area.
Despite numerous chances, the “Wolves” were unable to equalize. They hit the crossbar twice through Marina Hegering (52nd) and Vivien Endemann (68th).
As a result of the defeat, VfL is in third place in preliminary group A after the first matchday with no points – behind Olympique Lyon and Rome with three points each. VfL will play their next game in the premier class on October 17th, when last year’s French finalists Lyon visit Wolfsburg.
Final whistle: That’s it at the Stadio Tre Fontane. The local Roman women narrowly win 1-0 against VfL Wolfsburg. A very happy victory. After conceding an early penalty goal, the Lower Saxony team struggled in the first half, but showed significant improvement in the second half – especially on offense. This resulted in two hits on the crossbar. But since the ball didn’t want to go into the goal, VfL started the “premier league” with an unfortunate defeat.
82. Minute: The Wolfsburg women are trying hard, but time is running out. It hasn’t really become compelling in front of the AS goal recently.
74. Minute: Dangerous counterattack for Rome: After a nice forward from Giugliano, Dragoni gets the ball near the penalty spot. But her shot rushes just over the Wolfsburg goal. Again a very good opportunity for the AS.
68. Minute: Wolfsburg hits the crossbar again! After a short forward from Popp, Endemann takes a shot near the edge of the penalty area – and her slightly deflected shot crashes into the aluminum.
66. Minute: … but that was a bit too optimistic. AS keeper Ceasar easily catches the long-range shot.
66. Minute: Hegering remains the Wolfsburg player who poses the greatest goal threat. Now the defensive specialist takes the shot from around 28 meters…
60. Minute: Once again, Wolfsburg’s defense chief Hegering missed the equalizer with a header: after a corner, she stole to the near corner and cleverly headed the ball towards the goal. But AS goalkeeper Ceasar is on the spot and fends off the ball thanks to a great reflex.
56. Minute: … but Frohms is on the spot in the VfL goal and skillfully parries the ball with his foot. Still a top chance for AS.
56. Minute: Roma plays the ball high to the top. Haavi sprints over Wilms and lets the Wolfsburg player out with a backheel in the penalty area. The Norwegian leaves…
52. Minute: Huge opportunity for VfL: Hegering rises highest after a corner on the edge of the six-yard box and heaves the ball onto the crossbar. That was close! Wolfsburg’s best scoring opportunity so far.
46. Minute: VfL is relying on personnel changes: Blomquist and Jonsdottir replace Brand and Hendrich.
46. Minute: It goes on. The second half is underway.
Half time: The Romans go into the locker room with a score of 1-0. And that is entirely deserved. Although VfL had 61 percent of the ball, there was almost no danger in front of the AS goal. The she-wolves have to step up at least one gear to survive here.
45. Minute: When it comes to offense, the She Wolves continue to act rather uninspired. Lattwein takes heart and hits it from 20 meters, but the ball goes well over the box.
41. Minute: … but her low shot lands a few meters away from the goal.
41. Minute: Wolfsburg loses the thread a bit. Once again Rome plays the ball dangerously up front. Giugliano, who is lurking there, controls the ball on the edge of the penalty area, …
