by times news cr

Sixteen women petitioned the president Claudia Sheinbaum reconsider the appointment of Jorge Islas López as head of the newly created General Coordination of Consulates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

The above, because they indicate, are alleged victims of workplace harassment, harassment and gender violence by the former Mexican consul in New York; Hence they ask the Mexican president to:

“President, we trust that your Government will take this situation with the seriousness it deserves and that it will act with commitment to prevent Mr. Islas López’s behavior from continuing. We beg you to prevent other incidents of violence by Mr. Islas López and reconsider your appointment.”

This is because they report that at the time in which the current Coordinator of Consulates headed the representation in New York:

“Several of us, members of the Mexican Foreign Service and workers at the Consulate General, suffered constant harassment, harassment, and discrimination based on gender status by this man.”

At the same time, they point out that during the 5 years that Islas López held office, and that he was under the orders of former foreign ministers Marcelo Ebrard and Alicia Bárcena, secretaries of Economy and Environment, respectively, despite the formal complaints against him:

“Before the SRE and the Secretariat of Public Service, the Internal Control Body, and the Ethics Committee of the SRE, they issued only simple recommendations: that Mr. Islas López be trained in matters of Gender, Discrimination, Assertiveness, Leadership and Teamwork.”

For this reason, they insist on the intervention of the head of the Federal Executive, since they fear that the federal official could re-victimize them and/or retaliate against them, in addition to the fact that both they and other of their colleagues are afraid to report.

Migrants reject the appointment

On the other hand, the Binational Migrant Force Movement also rejected the appointment of Islas López as Coordinator of Consuls.

In a statement, they indicated that they have received “multiple communications” from countrymen who are concerned about the designation, which is why they ask Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to reconsider his decision.

This is because they consider that “a career and experienced diplomat” should be in charge of the Coordination.

For her part, in her Mañanera this Wednesday, the President indicated that the issue will be addressed by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente:

“I have asked the Chancellor to review the issue. I saw these complaints and requests and we have to review them, to what extent this is the case or not, but let the countrymen know that what we want is to strengthen the Consulate for their attention.”
