On the occasion of Hebrew Day today (Thursday), the Hebrew Language Academy invited the public to choose the word of the year. Nine words were put to the vote, and they were chosen from hundreds of proposals that came from the public. Many thousands responded to the request and participated during the Hebrew Week in voting on the Hebrew Language Academy website. Throughout the voting days, the word troll led by a considerable margin from the other words, and is the word chosen for the word of the year. It is not inconceivable that the success of the song “Trilli Tralla” by Noa Kirl and Ilan Peled helped its popularity.
The three words that competed for the following places represent the corona plague that has accompanied us for two years: a vaccine that won second place, a mutant that came in third place, and a booster that was chosen in fourth place.
The other words that were chosen also reflected the past year: Climate – in light of the climate crisis that has entered the public consciousness; Change – a word that calls for a government that arose and called itself the “government of change”; Routine – in light of the attempt to return to routine in the shadow of the corona plague; Traffic jams – which make our lives more and more bitter; And a gold medal, which reminds us of Israel’s achievements in the last Olympics.
Where does the word troll come from? The academy explains: In the old-fashioned slang language, the word trollla (and also trollallah) is used as a nickname for a distracted person. This nickname was derived about four decades ago where the adjective troll and verb to troll in the sense of madness, harassment and harassment. Hence the name of the action Troll.

The word trillio was also established as a standard term in the “Dictionary of Music Terms” published by the academy in 1955. This troll is related to the Italian word trillio which means curl of the voice, change of tone (in rapid repetitions).
The word troll is unrelated to the words trill and trella that were born on social media. These words were derived from the nickname troll for a surfer whose purpose is to cause a commotion and heat the spirits. The Academy of the Hebrew Language notes that the word troll, which was created in the slang language, has also taken its place in the general spoken language. The word troll is similar to other words in which a root is derived from a sound word (onomatopoeia) borrowed from the foreign language and entered into a Hebrew format, such as click and click from the word ‘click’.
