“Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity, and environmental integrity depend on the well-functioning and equitable management of the water cycle.” Extract from the World Water Day 2024 Manifesto

Last March 22, World Water Day was celebrated, a date chosen by the United Nations Organization (UN) to raise awareness about the importance of water and its management. Water is an essential resource for life on our planet and more specifically, for our health.

Access to water is a fundamental right, recognized by the UN in 2010. However, this right is at risk due to factors such as the climate crisis, population growth and pollution, waste and misuse.

It is a right of all people to have safe, accessible, affordable water of acceptable quality.

As stated in the World Water Day 2024 manifesto, it is a fundamental element for life and health, as well as for the prosperity and development of people. Its importance is such that, when it is scarce or there is unequal access, it can generate conflicts and tensions between countries and communities, which is why the motto chosen for this year has been “Water for peace”, which urges countries to join together and protect this precious asset.
