Worldwide PC sales fell 9% in the third quarter, continuing a two-year decline. Nevertheless, Gartner analysts expect growth to recover in the next quarter: by the end of the year, both companies and individual consumers will begin to actively buy computers.

Yesterday, October 9, research company Gartner presented report, dedicated to personal computer sales in the third quarter. Their sales fell 9% to 64.3 million. This is the eighth consecutive quarter in which PC sales have declined. True, the pace is slowing down – a year earlier, sales showed the strongest drop in 20 years, by 19.5%, and in the second quarter of this year – by 16.6%.

Moreover, Gartner experts believe that growth will resume in the fourth quarter.

“There are signs that the decline in the PC market has bottomed out. Seasonal demand in the education market boosted shipments in the third quarter, although enterprise demand for PCs remained weak, offsetting this growth,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

According to him, companies have also made significant progress in reducing PC inventories in warehouses – if pre-holiday sales are good, they should return to normal levels by the end of the year.

PC sales began to decline at the end of 2021 after a sharp increase in demand with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many companies switched to remote work, distance learning spread, etc. The situation was also aggravated by an increase in PC inventories amid supply chain disruptions. As a result, PC sales have been falling for the past two years.

Mr. Kitagawa said the business PC market is now ready for PC replacements, helped by Windows 11 updates. Demand for consumer PCs will also begin to recover as the first consumers who bought PCs during the pandemic begin to replace them, he said. Gartner expects sales to grow 4.9% in 2024, across both the enterprise and consumer segments.

The leader in the PC market in the third quarter remained the Chinese company Lenovo, whose share exceeded a quarter (25.1%), increasing from 23.9% a year earlier. It is followed by HP (21%), Dell (16.1%), Apple (9.7%) and ASUS (7.6%). PC sales of most brands decreased during this period, with the only exception being HP, which increased them by 6.4%.

Apple sales fell the most – by 24.2%.

Dell sales decreased by 14.2%, ASUS – by 11.5%, Lenovo – by 4.4%.

By region, sales fell the most in the Asia-Pacific region – by 13%. This was primarily due to a 20% decline in China. Sales in the US decreased by 9.3%, in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region – by 3.6%.
