X (formerly Twitter) Elon Musk has paid the fines imposed on her by the Brazilian Supreme Court and will petition to resume work in the country.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this was reported by Reuters with reference to the document.
“The Brazilian branch of X requests that the platform be unblocked for free access by its users in the country,” the document says.
According to the agency, the company’s payment of the fine in the amount of $5.24 million was made and “duly confirmed.”
At the end of August, Brazilian judge Alexandri de Morais ordered the suspension of X’s activities in the country. The court’s decision followed owner Elon Musk’s refusal to appoint its legal representative in Brazil.
X announced on August 17 that it was closing its representative office in Brazil due to threats to its employees. The company claimed that it had received a secret decree from di Morais, who threatened the representative office’s legal adviser with arrest if he did not comply with the order to block certain accounts. It was reported that X will remain available for Brazilian users.
In April, CNN Brasil reported that X had provided Congress with information about a request from Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court to moderate content. According to Brazilian media, Musk accused di Morais of violating the constitution by trying to block the accounts of several supporters of former President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro. The billionaire suggested that the judge resign, threatening otherwise to make public demands to block accounts.
Di Morais ordered an investigation into allegations that Musk was obstructing Brazilian justice and using social media to spread disinformation and destabilize democratic institutions. The judge warned that the republic’s authorities will not tolerate a situation in which billionaires located abroad control social networks, allow themselves to violate the rule of law, ignore court orders and threaten Brazilian departments.
