Yanchep Lagoon Foreshore Conversion Gains Momentum with $1.35 Million Infrastructure Investment

A thorough revitalization of the Yanchep Lagoon foreshore is moving forward, with the City of Wanneroo awarding $1.35 million in contracts for crucial infrastructure upgrades. The project represents a meaningful step toward realizing a long-term vision for the popular Western Australian coastal destination.

Infrastructure Upgrades Pave the Way for New Amenities

At its most recent meeting, the City of Wanneroo approved contracts for upgrades along Brazier road, focusing on the installation of essential utilities. These improvements are specifically designed to support the construction of a new Dome cafe at the site of the Old Yanchep Surf Lifesaving Club. This development is anticipated to be a major draw for both residents and tourists.

“It’s excellent to see it progressing to a stage where we’re going to see some real works on the ground,” stated a local council representative during the meeting. “The upgrade of the Orion Cafe was a fantastic result for the community, but this really paves the way for a really significant amount of work that is going to be happening in the area.”

Long-Term Vision for Yanchep Lagoon

The infrastructure investment is viewed as a critical component of a broader, long-term plan for the Yanchep Lagoon foreshore. Mayor Linda Aitken emphasized the project’s roots, recalling her involvement in the initial master plan development years ago. “We can’t wait until we get the Dome open and we start realizing what’s happening once we’ve got the services up there,” she said. “We need the infrastructure there before it can happen.”

The City of Wanneroo recently released the draft Yanchep Lagoon Foreshore Management Plan for public review, outlining further proposed developments across the precinct. The plan envisions a vibrant and dynamic coastal hub, balancing recreation, tourism, and environmental preservation.

Proposed Developments and Conservation Efforts

The draft plan details a range of exciting additions to the Yanchep Lagoon foreshore, including:

  • A Beach Bar at The Settlement
  • A Family Cafe at Fisherman’s Hollow
  • A boardwalk connecting The Settlement and mary Lindsay Homestead
  • New walkways and lookouts at Dune park
  • Approximately 300 square meters of retail space adjacent to the Orion Cafe, intended for five specialty shops – potentially including a delicatessen or ice cream shop.

Recognizing the area’s ecological sensitivity, the plan also proposes the establishment of two dedicated conservation areas to protect the “sensitive coastal environments.” The City of Wanneroo aims to foster “greater opportunities for tourism, recreation, and economic growth” while maintaining the area’s unique coastal character.

Addressing Coastal Erosion and Future Planning

The Yanchep Lagoon foreshore is susceptible to ongoing erosion, requiring approximately 2,000 tonnes of sand renourishment annually. To mitigate future risks, all proposed developments are being strategically planned outside the projected 2070 erosion vulnerability line.

Parking upgrades are also underway, with detailed design and planning scheduled for completion in 2026. The city spokesperson noted that “Yanchep Lagoon is one of Perth’s most treasured coastal destinations and the draft Foreshore Management Plan is about planning carefully for its future as the area continues to grow.”

Public Consultation and Next Steps

The draft Yanchep Lagoon Foreshore Management Plan is currently open for public feedback until Sunday, February 8. The city of Wanneroo will then review all submissions and either endorse or amend the plan before submitting it for final approval to the Western Australian Planning Commission. This collaborative approach ensures that the future of the Yanchep Lagoon foreshore reflects the needs and desires of the community it serves.
