As part of the Young Jazz Lab project, the concert of the Rhythm and Improvisation Orchestra directed by Francesco Nastro. An ensemble of 70 children aged 8 to 18, selected from the students of the Campania schools who participated in the project conceived by the Pomigliano Jazz Foundation and financed by the Campania Region’s Department of Education.


The initiative – carried out in partnership with 12 schools in Campania, thanks to the “Scuola Viva Program” – aims to ignite, develop and specialize, among the participating students, the passion for music and jazz, counteracting the phenomenon of dispersion school and early school leaving.

Through workshops based on theoretical-practical lessons, in-depth studies on rhythm and improvisation, listening guides and meetings with artists, the young musicians of the orchestra have developed fundamental concepts of improvisation and instant composition. Creating a live set that goes beyond musical genres and embraces different styles and eras. The result of the didactic path in recent months and the creativity of the children led by tutors Manuela Renno (choir) and Annibale Guarino (winds).

In the lineup songs of the Neapolitan tradition and jazz standards, contemporary compositions and rock or funk songs. They range from “Yes I know My Way” by Pino Daniele to “Freddie Freeloader” by Miles Davis, passing through the contamination of a tammurriata that blends “La Rumba Degli Scugnizzi” by the Nuova Compagnia Di Canto Popolare with “Last Train Home” by Pat Metheny. “Zitti e Buoni” by Maneskin meets “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, the classic Carosonian, “Tu Vu F L’Americano” merges with “Mr. Saxobeat ”by Alexandra Stan and“ Soul Bossa Nova ”by Quincy Jones. “Vesuvio” by Zezi meets “Watermelon Man” by Herbie Hancock and “So What” again by Miles.

To anticipate the performance of the Orchestra of Rhythm and Improvisation there will be the screening of “Vesuvius Jazz”, the docufilm born from an idea of ​​Onofrio Piccolo, written by Giuseppe Pesce, who signs the direction with Giovanni Maria Pacchiano, who tells the fascinating journey around Vesuvius, through the concerts and the many activities proposed by the Pomigliano Jazz festival in recent years.

Young Jazz Lab a project by the Pomigliano Jazz Foundation, funded by the Campania Region – Education Department and implemented as part of the “Scuola Viva Program – Accompanying Actions” with funds from the POR Campania ESF 2014-2020, co-financed by the MIC – Ministry of Culture and sponsored by the Municipality of Pomigliano d’Arco.
