CDU leader Friedrich Merz visited the Junge Union’s Germany Day in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. The party’s young talent accompanied the performance with a well-known song: the new edition “Time for something to turn” by Herbert Grönemeyer, recorded together with the rapper Soho Bani.

The fact that his art was used to create a mood at Germany Day bothers Soho Bani. He shared a post on his Instagram story that shows an excerpt from the event. He wrote directly to the CDU and the Junge Union: “If you continue to use my song at Friedrich Merz’s events, I will take legal action.”

“Time for something to turn around” was the anthem for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The new edition, however, makes a political statement and can be understood as a protest against the right. “It was important to me that the song didn’t become inaccessible. You should be able to feel it despite its message, which is why I didn’t get too specific about the content. But I believe that the song is through the mood it conveys and through what what was then said was pretty clearly understood by everyone,” explained Soho Bani to the “Berliner Zeitung” in mid-October.

It is not the first time that an artist has defended himself against the use of his song in a political context. For example, in August: “My Heart Will Go On”, the hit by Céline Dion, was played at a campaign event for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The singer did not know in advance that her song would be used and banned the Republicans from further use.
