The race was extremely close: “Aura” is the youth word of the year 2024, with a very slim advantage over “Talahon” and a new interpretation of “scissors”. And Susanne Daubner was convinced by her fans to announce the word youth again.

TV presenter Susanne Daubner let herself be convinced by her fans and on social media “Tagesschau” once again explained the youth word of the year. “Dear community, your comments amazed and touched me so much. I’ve read almost all of them and I have to say: you have convinced me,” the 63-year-old said in a video on the “Tagesschau” Instagram channel and Tiktok account.

Already at the end of July Daubner had announced that he would no longer submit the youth word of the year on the Internet and that he would now let the others go first – after the protest of his supporters he has now changed his mind: “Yes, I came back for you and I will continue to use the words of young people to announce you.

She then also introduced the current winner “Aura” and immediately after gave a suitable example in her familiar style: “I was simply replaced by an AI – minus 5000 Aura”.

The “Youth Word of the Year” has existed since 2008. In recent years, Susanne Daubner has featured the respective words in posts on social networks – thus creating a fan base. In 2021, he presented the winning word “Cringe” (to shame others) in a clip and explained it in a state-supportive tone as follows: “Cringe is the feeling you get when I say the following sentence: Digga, how the ‘Tagesschau’ actually flies when it is declined with youthful words. It’s up to you – ARD.”

What does the term “aura” mean?

The youth word of the year 2024 is “aura”. In youth parlance the term is often used jokingly when talking about a person’s charisma, the Langenscheidt publishing house announced at the Frankfurt am Main book fair on Saturday. “Aura” can be used positively and negatively.

“I thought there was no more level and I stumbled: minus 50 aura,” Langenscheidt provided as an example of its use. “Aura” became a household word in sports after the “New York Times” wrote about a football player in 2020 and based on an advertising slogan: “Solutions are expensive. An aura is priceless.” (Solutions are expensive. An aura is priceless.)

“Talahon” only came in second place

The publisher said the term has “a slim lead” over “Talahon” in second place and “Schere” in third place. Talahon comes from Arabic and originally means “come here”. It is used to describe young people who wear fake luxury clothes and walk around the city center with a fanny pack, sweatpants and a gold chain to make themselves important.

The new meaning of the word “scissors” or “scissors lift” comes from online gaming and the streaming scene. This means admitting that you made a mistake or that you have taken on guilt. In these cases we “raise the scissors” to take note of it.

Since 2008, the Langenscheidt-Verlag has chosen the youth word of the year and since 2020, young people aged between eleven and twenty have been voting online. “Goofy” was the youth word of the year 2023 and indicates an awkward or silly person; “Smash” (2022) means “to do something with someone”.
