As if he wanted to speak out

Yuri Solomin’s interview in the “Exclusive” program can be considered a great success. It is difficult to remember the last time Yuri Methodievich spoke in detail in front of the camera. And in this case, this coincided with great concern for the health of the legendary actor after he was admitted to the hospital.

The lively talk show “Let Them Talk” turned into the “Exclusive” program, where Dmitry Borisov replaced secular detective stories with a genre also Soviet, but more polished, without the hysterical tone, bulging eyes and ridiculous confessions. This does not mean that the creators of the program are no longer interested in Vanga’s predictions or the legacy of Zhenya Belousov, but one-on-one conversations with Borisov himself, as a TV presenter with a vocabulary and a set of good manners, gives the whole thing a completely different mood.

The interview with Yuri Solomin was recorded a few days before the artist was admitted to the hospital, and in such a dramatic situation, great luck fell on the program, no matter how cynical it may sound. At that moment, the personality of the actor and director of the Maly Theater was of interest to absolutely everyone who had heard about him, and the interview turned out to be just the right spoon for dinner.

“Lunch” consisted entirely of delicacies. More than forty minutes of the old school from Yuri Solomin himself and his closest friends and associates. Nowadays they very rarely talk like that on television. Without unnecessary gestures or theatrical pauses, in good Russian and to the point.

Yuri Methodievich himself seemed to want to speak out. If his health allows, he will probably give interviews on occasions, of which the Maly Theater will have many, but in “Exclusive” he said much more. With incredible delicacy, he remembered how he fell in love with his only wife, then still a student and future actress Olga Andrianova, briefly but succinctly emphasized the issue of competition with his brother Vitaly Solomin (“he is more social, and I am more intelligent”), and finally, spoke about the film that he considers the main thing in his life (this is not “His Excellency’s Adjutant,” which made the actor a big star, and not the Oscar-winning “Dersu Uzala” by Akira Kurosawa, but “The Shore of His Life,” which Solomin directed and played in the film role of Miklouho-Maclay). And also, without malice or contempt, he formulated his attitude towards modern theater: “I don’t go, because it’s inconvenient to leave after the first act.”

After all these words and a short trip behind the scenes of the Maly Theater, Yuri Methodievich has the right not to be frank anymore. Like a true gentleman, he said enough. Everything else can be learned from his films and performances.

MASHKOV THEATER

The documentary film for Vladimir Mashkov’s sixtieth birthday also became a big exclusive, but of a slightly different nature. The creators of the film were more likely to spy on the hero of the day than to extract revelations from him. And it was much more interesting to spy.

Adventure is always fun. And with Mashkov, throughout a rather large film, something was constantly happening. In search of future students of Oleg Tabakov’s theater school, the actor and artistic director of “Tabakerka” traveled through several cities, and from thousands of applicants, in front of the audience, he selected a dozen and a half of the most capable. In addition, the hero of the day visited his historical homeland, walked through the places of his childhood and youth, gave a number of conclusions and let cameras go behind the scenes of several popular performances.

After the creative intelligentsia began to make political speeches with varying degrees of tongue-tiedness, it became quite difficult to treat them as before. But those viewers who were able to separate the theater from the government’s service and tolerate the narcissism typical of an actor popular throughout the country saw a lot of interesting things.

The biggest success of this not very smooth and sometimes drawn-out film was the behind-the-scenes scenes with the participation of both professional and future actors. This is where the sparks really flew. It’s hard to remember when the underbelly of theater was shown so interestingly, without commentary or minor editing, that is, practically in the mode of a reality show. During the final credits, one could not shake the feeling that they were glorifying the theater first, and only then the famous hero of the day.
