The game against Bochum, which was scored 0-2 against Union after a fire move, continues to cause trouble. The president of Köpenicker does not accept the verdict.
Union Berlin immediately announced an appeal against the verdict. President Dirk Zingler explained: “It’s bad enough that people repeatedly throw objects on stages, indoors or on the lawn at concerts or sporting events.”
He added: “However, it is much worse when someone tries to take advantage of these events, which cannot be prevented by any organizer, especially when uninvolved third parties are also significantly disadvantaged as a result.” According to Zingler, that is the case. “The actual unsportsmanlike scandal took place after the event on the pitch and today in court,” said Union President.
“This ruling is enormously damaging to football, but it will not prevent the unacceptable throwing of objects,” explained Zingler and added: “Rather, we are exposing ourselves to the risk that in the future the sporting performance of the teams will not be the deciding factor, like a game whether the game is stopped or continued must always be the sole decision of the referee.”
After the incident, Bochum objected to the original score of 1:1. Goalkeeper Drewes was hit in the head shortly before the final whistle and had to be taken to hospital with dizziness and nausea. The game continued after a break of around 30 minutes.
VfL managing director Ilja Kaenzig was relieved by the DFB sports court’s decision: “It is still extremely regrettable that this incident and the resulting negotiation even occurred.” Kaenzig emphasized the necessary consistency when dealing with such incidents.
