Zohran Mamdani Inaugurated as New york City’s 112th Mayor, Ushering in a New Era

New York City welcomed Zohran Mamdani as its 112th mayor as he officially took the oath of office just after midnight on New Year’s Eve, marking a historic moment for the city. The private ceremony, held at the abandoned Old city hall subway station, was officiated by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The 34-year-old democratic socialist,previously representing the Queens neighborhood of Astoria in the 36th Assembly District,has broken barriers as the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first of South Asian descent. “This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani stated following the swearing-in.
A Symbolic Swearing-In
The choice of the Old City Hall subway station as the location for the initial ceremony was deliberate, with Mamdani describing it as a “testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health and the legacy of our city.” He instantly followed the private oath with the announcement of Mike Flynn as his new Department of Transportation commissioner, signaling a clear priority for his governance.
Public Inauguration and Early Actions
“I think there is really going to be a lot of energy. I think many of us who have had a chance to cover Mamdani and to photograph him have really seen the charisma up close, and I think he has really been able to like create these connections to so many diffrent New yorkers.”
In the days leading up to the inauguration, Mamdani has appointed five new high-ranking members of his administration, including a new city schools chancellor, Kamar Samuels.
Introducing DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn
A key appointment is that of Mike flynn as the new Department of Transportation commissioner. Flynn brings over two decades of experience in both the public and private sectors, and will be instrumental in achieving Mamdani’s affordability goals, notably the implementation of free buses.
“It is an honor to have Mike here alongside me as we embark on an administration that will take seriously the obligation and the prospect we have to make this streetscape and the public transit of the city we call home the envy of the world,” Mamdani said during the swearing-in. He emphasized Flynn’s experience and vision as crucial to transforming the city’s transportation infrastructure.
Flynn previously served as a vice president and sector manager for TYLin city Solutions, where he led teams addressing complex transportation challenges throughout the New York City region. Prior to that, he spent nearly a decade with the New York City Department of Transportation, holding senior leadership positions focused on capital planning and project delivery.
Flynn expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am honored by the trust Mayor Zohran mamdani has placed in me to led the Department of Transportation and work alongside this team to deliver for New Yorkers. Transportation is essential to affordability and quality of life, it determines how peopel get to work, school, and home safely. I look forward to building a DOT that moves faster, puts safety first, and delivers real wins for working New Yorkers.”

Transportation experts have largely praised the selection of Flynn. Kate Slevin,executive vice president of the Regional Plan Association,stated,”RPA applauds the Mamdani Administration for appointing Mike Flynn as DOT Commissioner. he is a well-respected expert and leader in city transportation policy and we are excited to help him carry out a vision for better bus service and safer streets.”
