A dominant performance from Alexander zverev saw him overcome a stern test from Cameron Norrie and advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday. The world number three secured a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory in two hours and 46 minutes on John Cain Arena.
The German player expressed satisfaction with his progress, stating, “I’m happy with the win and moving forward.”
Battling to the Fourth Round
The match began as a tightly contested affair, with both players trading sets. After a gripping battle, the third round match was locked at a set apiece before Zverev found his stride. He ultimately overwhelmed his opponent, demonstrating a significant shift in momentum during the latter stages of the contest. Zverev won the first set 7-5, but Norrie responded by taking the second 6-4. Zverev then regained control, winning the third set 6-3 and closing out the match with a dominant 6-1 fourth set.
Zverev, who was defeated in last year’s final, acknowledged the need to elevate his game after a challenging start to the tournament. He had been pushed to four sets in each of his first two matches, indicating a vulnerability that he was determined to address. The 28-year-old admitted to struggling to find his peak form initially, but a breakthrough in the third and fourth sets provided a crucial confidence boost.
Norrie’s Run Ends, Cerundolo Awaits
With this victory, Norrie, a former world No. 8, becomes the last British player eliminated from the tournament. Zverev now turns his attention to his next opponent, Francisco Cerundolo, the 18th seed, who previously defeated 13th seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
This sets the stage for a compelling fourth-round encounter as Zverev continues his pursuit of the Australian Open title.
