40 years of democracy

40 years are the ones that our democratic life, recovered in 1983, will soon celebrate. This Sunday we Argentines are going to exercise once again, luckily, our constitutional right to elect and be elected. Surely the new generations do not have the exact dimension, like us, of the civic value of this act, perhaps precisely because they never stopped having it. Unfortunately, the balance of these four decades of democracy is absolutely negative, in any of the fields that we analyze and this would explain the abstention and the blank vote, which we have already been observing in almost all the elections this year, in the midst of a campaign that It seems to interest only the candidates. A sample button: in our city of Concepción, for the candidacies for councilor, the blank vote surpassed the most voted list in the last provincial elections, by almost 100 votes. The discredit of the political class and the hopelessness of a better future have already convinced hundreds of thousands of Argentines that Ezeiza is the only possible solution we have. Without contradicting this thought at all, we can say with certainty that in all the elections of these 40 years no one cast their vote with a gun to their head, and we assume, in full exercise of all their mental faculties. Surely we will have been wrong a couple of times when choosing, but millions of Argentines seem to have made it a national sport, “wrong” four times in a row with the same political project and the disastrous consequences are in sight. So, let’s stop blaming our misfortunes on the IMF, the empire, the right, the climate, the war, the hegemonic media, etc. The only and exclusive creators of our unfortunate present are the millions of Argentines who, over and over again, put our vote in the dark room. Not even the mediocre (and disastrous) leaders who came to power are guilty, because they were simply put by Juan Pueblo, “the sovereign”, and we can assure that despite everything (and everyone) our young democracy is definitely consolidated. Proof of this is that, with the most disastrous government in our history, no one is calling for a coup (a true anachronism), or helicopters, or early elections, or even a street march to speed up the leadership change. So, we are going once again this Sunday to place our convictions (right and wrong) in the ballot box, almost more as an act of faith and perseverance than as a civic duty. Perhaps this is the true beginning of the final takeoff that we so long for.
