A total of 520 students from the Bulgarian community in Ukraine were accepted as freshmen in higher education institutions in Bulgaria this academic year. Another 34 of our compatriots from Ukraine are enrolled to study master’s degrees in Bulgarian universities, and eight have been accepted as doctoral students. This became known at a meeting between the Acting Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Galin Tsokov, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Bulgaria, Olesya Ilashchuk, the department’s press center announced.
Ambassador Ilashchuk thanked for the opportunity given to young Ukrainian citizens to study in our universities according to the order in which Bulgarian students are educated. Admission is currently being organized for 400 places for Ukrainian students with temporary protection status who have graduated from high school in Bulgaria and want to continue their higher education in our country.
The minister announced that this week the government provided funding for school transport for Ukrainian children in the country who live in more remote areas. For their more successful integration, the Personal Development Support Centers in the respective cities organize preliminary training courses in the Bulgarian language, as well as adaptive lessons to familiarize them with our educational environment.
Ambassador Ilashchuk noted that efforts are being made to speed up the ratification by the Ukrainian side of two agreements proposed by Bulgaria – for cooperation and exchange between the ministries of education and science of the two countries, and for the Bolgrad Gymnasium “Georgi S. Rakovski”. She pointed out that the Bolgrad High School is an example of Bulgarian language teaching in Ukraine, which both countries are proud of. With the signing of the agreements, cooperation in language education between Bulgaria and Ukraine will be strengthened even more, and the status of the high school will be confirmed.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science Academician Nikolay Vitanov, the Director of the Directorate “International Cooperation” at the Ministry of Education and Culture Veselina Ganeva, the Head of the Department “Strategic Planning and Development Policies” at the Directorate “Higher Education” Yana Yotova and the state expert in the directorate “Inclusive Education” Anelia Yotova.
As BTA wrote yesterday, the government approved BGN 297,674 to provide free transportation to school for students with temporary protection from Ukraine. The funds will ensure their transportation from the places of accommodation to the educational institutions for the entire new school year – from September 16 to June 30, 2025, the press service of the Council of Ministers announced.
The largest number of children and students are accepted and educated in educational institutions in the regions of Burgas and Varna. They enroll in schools with available places and for this reason some of the children attend further educational institutions.
