The death toll from a shooting attack at a concert hall in Moscow, the Russian capital, has increased to 93. A total of 11 people, including two suspects in the shooting, were captured by Russian authorities.

According to TASS on the 23rd (local time), Russian State Duma (lower house of representatives) Information Policy Committee Chairman Aleksandr Hinshtein posted on social networking services (SNS), “Law enforcement agencies have detained two suspects in the terrorist attack that occurred at the Crocus City Hall in the Moscow region. “The rest are being searched,” he said.

He said, “The Renault car driven by the suspect was found at night near the village of Hachun, Karachevsky district, Bryansk region (southwest of Moscow). “The vehicle did not stop despite law enforcement officers’ orders and attempted to flee,” he said. “During the chase, a shootout occurred and the vehicle overturned.”

“One terrorist was arrested on the spot, and the rest fled into the forest,” he said. “As a result of the search, a second suspect was found around 3:50 a.m. and detained.”

He also announced that “the search for other suspects continues” and that “all law enforcement agencies are participating in the operation.”

The Russian Kremlin reported that Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Aleksandr Bortnikov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin that 11 people, including 4 directly involved in the terrorist attack that occurred at Crocus City Hall, were detained.

When the suspect was arrested, a pistol, a Kalashnikov automatic rifle (AK) magazine, and a Tajikistan passport were found in the vehicle.

Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs drew a line, saying, “The information that Tajikistan citizens were involved is false,” and “We emphasize that we have not received confirmation of the relevant facts from the Russian authorities.”

The Russian Investigative Committee (ICRF) announced that “to date, there have been 93 deaths,” and that “the number of deaths may increase further.” Currently, 107 injured people are being treated in hospitals.

According to the investigation, the main causes of death for the victims were gunshot wounds and poisoning with hazardous chemicals caused by fire.

The day before, at least four armed men stormed into the Crocus City Hall concert hall and opened fire with automatic rifles at about 6,000 audience members. Afterwards, explosives exploded at least twice and a fire broke out. The suspects fled the scene in two cars.

While the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility, U.S. officials assessed that the Afghanistan-based Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) was involved in the attack.

This incident is considered the worst incident to occur in Russia in 20 years.

In September 2004, Chechen rebels occupied an elementary school in Beslan, southern Russia, and carried out a terrorist attack, resulting in the deaths of 334 hostages and 31 terrorists. In February of the same year, a bombing occurred in the Moscow subway, killing 41 people.

No Korean casualties were reported.
