In Armenia, the non-exportable sector is flourishing, while the exportable sector is falling into the abyss, former SRC chairman Davit Ananyan said.
“During the last two years, the goverment has not implemented any function that would diversify the economy in one way or another, and the economic benefits received from sectors bearing external influence would be effectively directed to the exportable sectors of the economy,” Ananyan said on the air of the “Review” program.
According to the former chairman of the SRC, the government of Armenia pursues political rather than economic goals.
Ananyan noted that this government is not inclined to implement such programs that will ensure long-term results, on the contrary, it tries to be guided by programs aimed at obtaining results in the short term, because it has a desire to reproduce.
“Economy and politics are intertwined, moreover, in many cases it is indeed said that the economy dictates politics,” Ananyan emphasized.

Davit Ananyan: Thank you for having me. yes, the current situation is concerning. The non-exportable sector, which includes industries like construction and real estate, is experiencing growth. However, the exportable sector is suffering. This imbalance indicates a lack of government focus on diversifying the economy, which is crucial for lasting growth.

Davit Ananyan: The primary issue is the government’s prioritization of political goals over economic ones.Ther is a tendency to implement short-term programs that yield immediate results rather than investing in long-term economic strategies. This has direct implications for various sectors, notably exportable ones that rely on foreign markets and investments.

Davit Ananyan: Stakeholders should advocate for policies that promote diversification and support export-oriented industries. It’s essential to engage with policymakers, emphasizing the importance of international trade and sustainable economic practices. Collaboration among businesses, government, and civil society can create a more conducive surroundings for growth.
Time.news Editor: Looking ahead, what steps do you believe the Armenian government should take in order to improve the economic landscape?
Davit Ananyan: First, the government needs to reassess its priorities and recognize the value of a diversified economy. Implementing long-term economic strategies that focus on export growth and encouraging foreign investment should be at the forefront.
