A Return to Middle-earth: Extended Editions Lead the Charge

The trilogy’s standard editions will then be shown over a similar schedule next weekend, giving fans ample opportunity to experience the saga anew.
What makes these re-releases so special? The films are benefiting from a significant 25th anniversary marketing push, coupled with the added draw of new introductions from Jackson himself. These introductions promise a deeper connection to the films for longtime fans and a fresh perspective for newcomers.
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. and Fathom Entertainment revealed that Jackson recorded new messages to fans, set to play before each film.
In one clip shared online by Entertainment Weekly, Jackson recounted the challenges of filming the cave troll battle sequence in Fellowship, specifically the need to conceal a black eye sustained by Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) over the weekend. “We had to shoot around it,” Jackson explained, highlighting the dedication and often-unseen hurdles of filmmaking.
“The Lord of the Rings trilogy re-release is off to a record start for the franchise at Fathom,” said Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment. “We could not be more pleased that the large Lord of the Rings fanbase will have the benefit of hearing in-depth and exclusively in theatre from Peter Jackson himself prior to each of these three remarkable films.”
Roughly 407,000 tickets have been sold to date, according to reports, adding to the trilogy’s existing $3 billion in worldwide revenue. The enduring appeal of Tolkien’s world is undeniable, and this re-release is a testament to the films’ lasting impact on popular culture.
The Middle-earth franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Jackson is currently a producer on The Hunt for Gollum, a prequel slated for release on December 17, 2027. Elijah Wood, who played Frodo, has praised the script and expressed excitement about the reunion of Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Andy Serkis (Gollum), who will both star in and direct the new film.
