A 7-year-old Ruston girl is hospitalized with a rare brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, a pathogen state health officials confirmed was likely contracted while swimming in North Louisiana’s Lake Claiborne shortly before her illness developed.
State health officials confirmed that a North Louisiana resident contracted Naegleria fowleri, a single-celled organism commonly known as a brain-eating amoeba, following a recreational swim in Lake Claiborne located in Claiborne Parish.
While infections caused by the organism remain extremely rare, medical data cited by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control indicates they are fatal in 97% of cases. The single-celled organism feeds on brain tissue, causing primary amoebic meningoencephalitis when contaminated water travels up the nasal canal.
Identification and Hospitalization of Lillian Smart
While state public health releases initially kept the patient anonymous, local reporting identified the infected child as 7-year-old Lillian Smart of Ruston.
The young patient’s mother, Rebecca Smart, turned to social media to share news of the diagnosis and issue emotional pleas for community support.
Pathogen Biology and Infection Progression
Naegleria fowleri thrives naturally in warm freshwater environments, including lakes, rivers, canals, and ponds. State and federal health agencies note that the pathogen can occasionally appear in tap water, splash pads, and recreational water parks, though it cannot survive in saltwater or properly chlorinated pools.
Infection happens exclusively when water carrying the amoeba forces its way up the nasal passages. Swallowing contaminated water poses no risk of contracting the disease.
Initial symptoms typically present within about five days of exposure. Patients generally experience intense headaches, fever, nausea, and vomiting before the condition rapidly progresses to a stiff neck, seizures, and a comatose state, frequently resulting in death within one to two weeks.
