In order to manage the project of building a new nuclear power unit (power units) in the Republic of Armenia, a closed joint-stock company “Construction of a new nuclear power unit” will be established, the decision was taken at today’s government session.
The company must conduct a comparative study of all new proposed nuclear power plant technologies and feasibility studies.
The company must present its professional proposal on the choice of technology, which must be a comprehensively justified document. After the latter is approved by the RA government, the organization must negotiate and prepare the documents related to the construction, financing, possession and operation of the new nuclear power unit/s.
According to an approximate estimate, the organization will need an annual budget of around 800 million drams during the preparatory phase of technology selection and station construction.
The government expects that the new company will be able to present a conclusion 1.5-2 years after its creation.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Nuclear Power Expert on Armenia’s New Nuclear Power Unit
Time.news Editor (T): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Anna Khachatryan, an esteemed expert in nuclear energy and infrastructure development. We’ll be discussing the recent decision to establish a new nuclear power unit in Armenia. Dr. Khachatryan, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Anna Khachatryan (A): Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss this pivotal development in Armenia’s energy sector.
T: Let’s dive right in. Can you tell our readers what led to the decision to establish a closed joint-stock company for this new nuclear power unit?
A: Certainly! Armenia has recognized the necessity of diversifying its energy sources while ensuring energy security. The establishment of this new company will centralize the project management process, streamline financing, and enhance collaboration between government entities and international partners. It’s a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the country’s energy independence.
T: That sounds promising! What are some of the anticipated benefits of building this new nuclear unit for Armenia?
A: The primary benefits include a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, as nuclear power is a low-carbon energy source. Additionally, it will provide a stable and reliable electricity supply, which is essential for both the economy and the daily lives of citizens. This project will create jobs during the construction phase and beyond, boosting the local economy as well.
T: Sounds like a multifaceted advantage! However, what challenges might Armenia face in the process of constructing this new nuclear unit?
A: Definitely, while the benefits are significant, challenges do exist. These can range from securing adequate financing to navigating regulatory frameworks both domestically and internationally. There are also public concerns regarding safety, especially in a region that has experienced seismic activity. It’s crucial for the developers to prioritize transparency and community engagement throughout the project.
T: Safety is always a priority. Can you discuss the technological advancements that may be integrated into this new facility to enhance safety and efficiency?
A: Certainly! Modern nuclear reactors come equipped with advanced safety systems designed to prevent overheating and manage emergencies effectively. We may also see the integration of digital monitoring systems that provide real-time data about the plant’s operations. Furthermore, utilizing modular reactor designs can allow for phased construction and deployment, ensuring better management of costs and risks.
T: It’s reassuring to hear that. How might the establishment of this nuclear power unit impact Armenia’s position in the regional energy landscape?
A: Great question! Once operational, Armenia’s new nuclear power unit could position the country as a significant player in regional energy supply. It may allow for electricity exports to neighboring countries, enhancing economic ties while contributing to regional energy security. This could also facilitate collaborative ventures in energy production and distribution.
T: Exciting possibilities ahead! As a final question, what should stakeholders in Armenia focus on as they move forward with this project?
A: I would emphasize the importance of stakeholder engagement. Collaboration between the government, local communities, and international partners will be key to success. Additionally, prioritizing environmental impacts, safety protocols, and robust training programs for staff will ensure the operation is sustainable and responsible from inception through to execution.
T: Thank you, Dr. Khachatryan, for sharing your insights on this significant development in Armenia’s energy strategy. It’s clear that while the journey may have its challenges, the rewards can be substantial.
A: Thank you for having me! It’s an exciting time for nuclear energy in Armenia, and I look forward to seeing how this progresses.
T: And thank you to our audience for tuning in! We’ll continue to follow the developments of the new nuclear power unit in Armenia. Stay informed with Time.news!
