450 million drams (about 1 million US dollars) were spent from the state budget of Armenia for the “World Conference of Information Technologies-2019” (WCIT 2019) event, the concert held yesterday in Republic Square.
The corresponding decision was made at the session of the Armenian government on September 26.
450 million AMD was allocated to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia from the reserve fund of the budget of Armenia.
It should be noted that at the beginning of the concert, the “WCIT” orchestra performed, consisting of more than 100 musicians, 30 from Armenia.
The concert was led by the artistic director and chief conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Sergey Smbatyan.
In the second part of the concert, Grammy award-winning Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren performed.
The concert was accompanied by a beautiful laser show and ended with magnificent fireworks.
We should add that the decision to hold the “World Information Technology Conference-2019” in Armenia was made back in 2016.
The event, which started yesterday, will continue until October 9.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Dr. Anna Petrosyan, IT Policy Expert
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Petrosyan! Thank you for joining us to discuss the recent investment made by Armenia in hosting the “World Conference of Information Technologies 2019.”
Dr. Anna Petrosyan: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss such an important event for our country’s tech landscape.
Editor: Let’s dive right in. The Armenian government spent 450 million drams, roughly 1 million US dollars, on WCIT 2019. What were the key factors that led to this substantial investment?
Dr. Petrosyan: The investment was driven by a belief in the significant long-term benefits that come from hosting such a high-profile international event. It provides an opportunity to showcase Armenia as a growing technology hub, attracts global talent, and promotes collaboration among tech experts and businesses.
Editor: That makes sense! Given the magnitude of the event, how do you believe the money spent will impact the local economy?
Dr. Petrosyan: The economic impact can be multifaceted. Not only does it generate immediate revenue through tourism—hotels, restaurants, and transport services—but it also has potential long-term effects. By attracting foreign investment and fostering local startups, it can significantly boost the IT sector, which is crucial for Armenia’s diversification in economic activities.
Editor: Speaking of local development, how important are conferences like WCIT 2019 for Armenian tech entrepreneurs and startups?
Dr. Petrosyan: They’re incredibly important! Events like WCIT provide exposure to new business models, funding opportunities, and networking that may not be available locally. Startups can connect with potential investors and mentors, while also gaining insights into global trends and technologies. It’s a catalyst for innovation.
Editor: We often hear that hosting international conferences can put a country on the global map. In your opinion, did Armenia succeed in achieving that with WCIT 2019?
Dr. Petrosyan: Absolutely! The media attention and the caliber of attendees—from global tech leaders to policymakers—put Armenia in the spotlight. It sends a strong message: Armenia is serious about becoming a key player in the tech industry.
Editor: There are critics of such spending, claiming the funds could be allocated to more urgent needs. How do you respond to this perspective?
Dr. Petrosyan: It’s a valid concern, and I think the government must continue to balance immediate needs with long-term growth strategies. However, investing in technology and innovation is an investment in the future. If done thoughtfully, the returns can fund social programs, improve infrastructure, and ultimately enhance the quality of life for all Armenians.
Editor: That’s a great point. What advice would you give to the Armenian government for future investments in technology-related events?
Dr. Petrosyan: They should ensure a thorough analysis of the costs and benefits before making such significant expenditures. Collaboration with the private sector can also provide additional funding avenues. Furthermore, sustainability measures can ensure that the knowledge and connections made during these events have lasting impacts.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Petrosyan, for sharing your insights on Armenia’s investment in WCIT 2019. It seems like a pivotal step toward enhancing our presence in the global technology community.
Dr. Petrosyan: Thank you for the opportunity! It’s an exciting time for Armenia, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we leverage this moment moving forward.
