Rico was a philologist and historian of literature from the Middle Ages to the Golden Age. Professor of Medieval Hispanic Literatures at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he worked especially on Petrarch and early humanism in Italy and Spain, the Lazarillo de Tormes and the Quixote. His last and most complete edition of this work was presented on June 23, 2015 at the RAE. On May 2, 2016, Francisco Rico was part of the academic delegation that delivered his two volumes to Pope Francis at the Vatican.
He directed the Classical Library collection of the Royal Spanish Academy (BCRAE). The complete works of Cervantes in the BCRAE were presented in November 2019 before the kings of Spain within the framework of the XVI Congress of the ASALE.
