Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss such an important aspect of Iraq’s agricultural sector.
Editor: The Ministry of Agriculture has projected an increase in date production for this year. Can you share how much production is expected compared to the past years?
Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: Absolutely! In the past two years, Iraq produced a total of approximately 1,375 thousand tons of dates — over 650 thousand tons in 2022 and around 725 thousand tons in 2023. This year, we expect production to exceed these figures significantly.
Editor: That’s promising news! What factors contribute to this projected increase in date production?
Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: Several key factors play a role. First, enhanced agricultural practices and investment in modern farming techniques are being prioritized. Additionally, the Ministry is actively working to encourage international investment and collaboration in the food and agricultural industry, which is crucial for scaling our production capabilities.
Editor: You mentioned attracting international companies. What strategies is the Ministry implementing to foster this investment?
Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: We are focusing on creating a favorable investment climate by streamlining regulations, improving infrastructure, and providing incentives for companies looking to invest in Iraq’s agricultural sector. This includes specific initiatives aimed at promoting date production and its value-added processing.
Editor: What implications does this increase in date production have for the Iraqi economy?
Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: The rise in date production is incredibly beneficial for the economy. Dates are one of Iraq’s key agricultural exports and their increased production can boost trade revenue, create jobs, and contribute to food security. Additionally, a thriving date industry can enhance rural livelihoods, benefiting many Iraqi families.
Editor: As we look towards the future, what practical advice would you give to local farmers to maximize their production during this anticipated growth?
Muhammad Al-Khuzaie: I encourage local farmers to adopt modern agricultural techniques, such as efficient irrigation methods and pest management practices. Joining cooperative societies can also provide farmers with resources and access to better markets. Education and training programs offered by the Ministry can further empower farmers with the skills needed to improve their production.
