Work is underway to convert the existing parking lot in front of the Domestic Arrivals area of the Chennai airport into a green park and children’s play area.
A parking area of 25 thousand square meters is located in front of the domestic airport terminal. A new multi-storey car park and commercial complex has been constructed on the 3.36 lakh square meters in front of the Chennai airport.
As the multi-storey car park is about to become functional, the work of converting the land where the old car park was located into a green park has started. Cars are parked in an area in front of the domestic airport arrivals area. In another area, the construction of a park is underway.
A contract has been awarded to a private company to convert the parking lot into a park. They have cultivated the land and started the work of setting up a park on it.
For this purpose, grasses are grown in some foreign states including Bengaluru, loaded in trucks, arranged in rows and converted into parks. Greening of all this land; Airport officials said that it will be converted into a children’s play area and refreshment centers.
Allotment of land
Eight airports across the country were identified by the Airports Authority of India in February for all types of operations, including aircraft maintenance and repair.
According to this, 30 acres of land was given to Chennai Airport last June for maintenance and repair work called MRO. Out of this, 3,000 sq m of land has been allotted on lease basis to a Delhi-based private company for repair and maintenance work.
For this, the private company has to pay Rs 84.30 lakh per year to the airport management, airport officials said.
