Baichung Bhutia to score in Kalyan Chaubey’s net. Former Indian goalkeeper and striker face to face for the post of president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Both of them submitted their nomination papers. First day total 18 papers. There are two nominations for the post of President and the post of Treasurer. The Vice President received a letter. The executive committee received 13 papers.

The election will be held on September 2 to elect the president, vice president, treasurer and 17 executive committee members. Vote for 35 Association members of State- Union Territories. After the election, six former players will be inducted into the executive committee. Two of them will be women.

Former Indian goalkeeper Kalyan Choubey is a BJP leader from Bengal. The 45-year-old, who played for India between 1999 and 2006, joined the BJP in 2015. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost. Chaubey was nominated for the post of president by the Gujarat Association. Arunachal Pradesh Association supported.

Baichung Bhutia, who was the Indian captain, was nominated by the Andhra Pradesh Association. Rajasthan Association supported. The 45-year-old from Sikkim was the backbone of the Indian team between 1995 and 2011. The vice-presidential candidate from Kalyan Chaubey’s panel is Karnataka Football Association President and Congress MLA NA Harris. He is a native of Kasaragod. The treasurer candidate in the same panel is Kipa Ajay from Arunachal Pradesh. Gopalakrishna Kosaraju has filed a counter-affidavit. Kerala Football Association General Secretary P Anilkumar Choubey has submitted a petition to the executive committee.

Aim for future and growth

Baichung Bhutia said that he applied for the post of president with the aim of the future and growth of Indian football. I think I have every right to perform that duty. He played many matches for the country and leading clubs. Also involved in administrative matters. Bhutia also explained that he has worked as a part of the Olympic Cell of the Ministry of Sports.

Bhutia had previously filed for the post of president as a representative of the players. He was nominated by fellow player Deepak Mandal. Madhukumari backed the female star. Following the Supreme Court order, the players have lost their right to vote. The court order was to continue the earlier practice of voting rights for state football associations. That is how Bhootia again gave the paper with the support of the associations.

The outcome of Bhutia’s one-on-one battle against the panel led by Kalyan Chaubey and NA Harris remains to be seen. There is an opportunity to submit papers today and tomorrow.
