17 famous American writers and the Authors Guild representing them submitted a class action lawsuit in Manhattan court against the company OpenAI, which developed the ChatGPT chatbot. Plaintiffs include John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, Jonathan Franzen, Sylvia Day, George Saunders, Elin Hildebrand. They accuse OpenAI of copyright infringement, namely that the company used the texts of writers to train its ChatGPT chatbot illegally and without obtaining the necessary permission.

The plaintiffs claim that without the writers’ texts, OpenAI’s product would have been “completely different.” “The plaintiffs are not against the development of artificial intelligence and technological development in general. But the defendant (OpenAI company – Kommersant) should not have used the writers’ texts without permission and without paying the appropriate royalties,” the statement says.

The plaintiffs ask the court to find OpenAI guilty and determine the amount of damage caused to them. OpenAI itself statedthat all the materials she used to train the chatbot were taken from open sources and resources in compliance with the laws and rules established by these resources.
