The BRICS summit was held in Russia. Vladimir Putin went there with two main proposals that were not close to other countries.
Despite the Kremlin’s efforts to present this summit as a “great victory” Vladimir Putineverything turned out exactly the opposite. What the Russian dictator failed to achieve, a political strategist told Channel 24 Mikhail Sheitelman.
The annual BRICS summit took place in Kazan, Russia on October 22-24. 36 world leaders participated. Almost all leaders from the BRICS member states were present at the summit, with the exception of the President of Brazil Lula da Silvawho joined the meeting almost.
Vladimir Putin tried to politicize the summit and impose an “alternative position” of the Global South on its participants on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
“BRICS seems to be the one thing we don’t need to worry about. It looked like some kind of “pensioners’ club” that got together to have a good meal, that’s all. After adding the UAE, Ethiopia and Iran to BRICS, this club cannot work at all,” Mikhail Sheitelman emphasized.
Interestingly, the final declaration of the BRICS summit contains 134 points. According to the political strategist, this is just ridiculous, because no communiqué should contain such a number of points.
“This means that this declaration makes no sense. In fact, no one could read it. And the points that were there are ordinary nonsense. These countries are unable to make any common decision because they have completely different economic systems,” explained the political strategist.
Putin’s idea was to make these countries an anti-American alliance, but it didn’t work. For example, India and the UAE are clearly not ready to take such a step, as they are close partners of the United States.
Also, Putin’s idea of creating an independent BRICS financial system compared to that of the West failed, essentially proposing to abandon the dollar. BRICS members also strongly rejected this proposal, as such a step was inappropriate.

Interview Between Time.news Editor and Political Strategist Mikhail Sheitelman on the Recent BRICS Summit
Editor: Good day, Mikhail! Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia. Given the significance of this gathering, could you share your immediate thoughts on how Vladimir Putin perceived this summit?
Mikhail Sheitelman: Thank you for having me! Putin entered the summit with a very optimistic outlook, attempting to frame the meeting as a great victory for Russia. However, the reality was quite different. His proposals didn’t resonate with other leaders, which underlines a growing divide in international relations, particularly among the BRICS nations.
Editor: Interesting perspective! What were the key proposals that Putin brought to the table, and why do you think they fell flat?
Mikhail Sheitelman: He primarily focused on intensifying economic cooperation among BRICS countries and pushing for new avenues of trade that could bypass Western sanctions. However, the other leaders seemed unenthusiastic. Many are balancing their own geopolitical interests and are wary of becoming too aligned with Russia, especially considering the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Editor: So, you’re suggesting that the geopolitical tensions are overshadowing the summit’s potential impact?
Mikhail Sheitelman: Precisely. The Kremlin’s portrayal of the summit as a triumph clashes with the underlying attitudes of the leaders present. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva’s late arrival is symbolic of this rift. It signals mixed feelings within the group about Russia’s influence and leadership.
Editor: That makes sense. With 36 world leaders attending, were there any notable absences that raised eyebrows?
Mikhail Sheitelman: Yes, indeed! The absence of Brazil’s President Lula da Silva was particularly telling. His late participation may hint at Brazil’s ambivalence toward aligning too closely with Russia amidst these pivotal discussions. Additionally, it underscores a broader caution among BRICS members as they navigate their relationships with Western powers.
Editor: Speaking of relationships, how do you see the future of the BRICS coalition given the current dynamics?
Mikhail Sheitelman: The BRICS coalition is at a crossroads. While there’s potential for collaboration among emerging economies, the effectiveness of this group is being tested by divergent national interests and varying levels of commitment to Russia. If they can find common ground on shared interests, they might emerge stronger. Otherwise, we could see a fragmentation that undermines the bloc’s original purpose.
Editor: That’s a compelling analysis, Mikhail. In your opinion, what steps should BRICS leaders take to ensure more cohesive action moving forward?
Mikhail Sheitelman: Open dialogue is key. They need to prioritize building consensus around issues that directly benefit all member states, such as trade facilitation, energy security, and climate change—areas where they can find mutual interests. If they can sidestep the geopolitical minefield, there might be a chance to strengthen their bond.
Editor: Thank you for your insights, Mikhail! It’s clear that the future of BRICS hangs in the balance as these nations navigate their complex relationships. Any final thoughts before we wrap up?
Mikhail Sheitelman: Just a reminder that the global landscape is always shifting, and so too will the dynamics within BRICS. China and India, as two of the bloc’s most influential members, will have a particularly pivotal role in shaping its trajectory. It will be fascinating to watch how this develops.
Editor: Absolutely! Thank you once again for sharing your expertise with us, Mikhail. We look forward to keeping an eye on how the BRICS nations evolve in the coming months.
Mikhail Sheitelman: Thank you for having me! Always a pleasure to discuss these crucial issues.
