Anil Chelahan has experience as the Commander of the Eastern Wing of the Indian Army and has worked effectively in tense situations in Jammu and Kashmir and North Eastern states. Anil Selahan retired as a lieutenant general after serving in the army for about 40 years.

Bipin Rawat, the former Commander-in-Chief of the Tri-Armies, has been appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief after the death of his helicopter in a helicopter crash in the Nilgiris.
