(Web Desk) Fines and penalties have been announced in the new traffic law in the United Arab Emirates.
The new traffic law issued by the UAE government on Friday sets tougher penalties for a number of traffic offences, including jail terms and higher fines for multiple violations and dangerous offences.
These offenses include crossing the roads improperly, fleeing after causing accidents, driving under the influence of alcohol.
Crossing the road unsafely
Crossing the road at places other than those designated for the purpose shall be punishable with imprisonment and a fine not exceeding Dh5,000 and Dh10,000 if the act results in a traffic accident.
Drunk driving
Improper use of a license plate shall be punishable with imprisonment and a fine not less than 20,000 dirhams or with either of these penalties.
Imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh30,000 and not more than Dh200,000 for attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol.
Drivers with a suspended driving license shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding (3) months and a fine not exceeding Dh10,000 or both.
A hit and run case
The penalty for fleeing the scene of an accident and failing to provide relevant information shall not exceed one year, with a minimum fine of Dhs 50,000 and a maximum of Dhs 100,000.
Any person who causes the death of another person by negligently using a vehicle shall be liable to imprisonment and a fine of Dh50,000.
If the incident occurs under particularly troubling circumstances, such as driving in a valley during a flood, the penalty will be at least one year in prison and a fine of not less than Dh100,000.
