Armenia should already think about the construction of a new power unit of the NPP. During the panel discussion held on the topic “Prospects of the development of the nuclear industry in Armenia”, UN international expert on energy issues Ara Marjanyan announced.
According to him, in parallel with the extension of the operation period of the 2nd power unit of the NPP, it is necessary to decide on the construction of a new power unit.
“Armenia does not have enough reserves of natural primary energy carriers, and providing the economy with electricity at competitive prices is an important strategic decision for the country. In turn, abandoning nuclear energy is fraught with serious energy and economic losses for the country, as well as energy security,” Marjanyan noted.
As for the comprehensive and expanded partnership agreement between Armenia and the EU, one of the clauses of which is the requirement to close the NPP in 2026, according to Marjanyan, it is not advisable to close the Armenian NPP without having a replacement equivalent to its capacity. As for renewable energy sources, according to the expert, neither solar nor wind energy nor small HPPs have such a guaranteed capacity as the NPP has, therefore they cannot replace nuclear energy.
To remind, the panel discussion was held at the end of February with the support of “Rosatom” state corporation and “Armatom” CJSC Armenian Scientific Research Institute dealing with issues of NPP operation.
