When you say ‘Asia’s cleanest village’, some may think that it is in Japan or Singapore. But can you believe that our country has the cleanest village in the world! But that’s the truth.
While garbage, pollution and plastic are increasing on the one hand, another proud face in India is the village of Maulinong in one of the northeastern states of Meghalaya. This village is located in the East Kashi Hills, about 79 km from the capital Shillong.

In Maulinang Village, people live in harmony with nature. About 90 families live in this village. Here, from young to old, no one hesitates to clean the village as their first duty every morning, especially the public toilet here. Use of plastic and smoking are prohibited here. Apart from this, a dedicated rainwater harvesting system has also been installed in all the houses.

In this village you won’t even find garbage on the road sides because there are bamboo waste baskets on both sides of the road to segregate the waste. Biodegradable garbage collected in these is sorted and used as natural compost. Others are taken outside and destroyed.

And they keep the plants in the non-biodegradable plastic bottles added to it. And they will recycle it and replace it. Surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and forests, Maulinong is also a great tourist destination.

A large number of local and foreign tourists visit here every year. Let us take Maulinang as a pioneer village and try to make our villages clean.
