Brazilian rescue teams are making a great effort under heavy rain to help victims of the severe storm that struck the southeastern regions of the country at the weekend, especially the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, and resulted in at least 25 deaths.

Two deaths recorded in Abiaca raised the number of victims to 17 in the state of Espiritu Santo, according to a statement issued by Civil Protection.
State Governor Renato Casagrande spoke of a “chaotic situation” in Mimoso do Sul, which has a population of about 25,000 people, where at least 15 people died due to floods, according to an official toll that is expected to rise.
But the governor said on social media that the water level dropped on Sunday, after a night that witnessed almost no rain, allowing paramedics to reach previously inaccessible areas.
Aerial photos of Mimoso do Sul, taken on Saturday and published by Civil Protection, showed entire neighborhoods in the city submerged in water, with only the roofs of houses visible. Other photos published by local media showed several vehicles swept away by the current, including a rescue vehicle.
The storm killed eight people in the neighboring state of Rio de Janeiro between Friday and Saturday, most of them due to landslides in a mountainous area, according to authorities.
The regional government confirmed that four people were killed in the collapse of a house and a small building in Petropolis, a tourist town about 70 kilometers from the state capital.
