Bolzano. Benedict Chika Ibolekwu is still in Germany, locked up in a Bavarian prison: the validation hearing for his transfer to Italy is expected in the next few days. The 35-year-old of Nigerian origins was arrested at the beginning of March because he was believed to be the alleged attacker of ex-mother-in-law Waltraud Kranebitter Auer62 years old, seriously injured a stab wounds in the basement of his condominium in via Cavour on the evening of February 13: only due to a miracle and the timeliness of the rescue services, the violence did not have a fatal outcome. The conditions of the physiotherapist from Bolzano are improving, although she is still hospitalized at “San Maurizio” in an ordinary department. While the Auer family, understood as her husband Robert and her daughter, want to move on. She’s trying at least. In the past few days Benedict Chika Ibolekwu he sent several letters addressed to his ex-wife, with whom relations had deteriorated for some time, already months before the attack, so much so that contact had been eliminated. “We decided not to read anything she wrote,” he reveals Robert Aueralso SVP councilor of the Center constituency, «We are too many saddened and deeply shocked from the episode. If the police arrested him, it means that they have important elements at their disposal. We immediately forwarded the letters to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to contribute to the investigations.” The writings will be merged into the prosecution file for attempted murder. From the letters it could be deduced that the man of Nigerian origins denies any involvement in the attack. As reported by the “Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung”, the thirty-five year old never apologized in the messages delivered to via Cavour 8. Indeed, he would have referred almost exclusively to the separation with his ex-wife which occurred in September. And how unfair it wasestrangement from two young children officially sanctioned by the Munich court. Benedict Chika Ibolekwu would have appealed, reporting the abduction of minors to the Italian authorities. From there, her ex-husband began to be insistent, to put pressure on her, so much so that she turned to the Gea anti-violence center (“if she comes back, call 112 immediately”, the advice of the operators).

The new life

«Since the arrest we have started to breathe again. We no longer have to watch our backs when we go out”, reiterates Robert Auer, “We have been surrounded by solidarity never seen before. Our neighbors and some friends help us with the children while we go to hospital from Waltraud. Someone even cooked lunch for us. My grandchildren are happy to see someone at home, they are presences that reassure them. Now we are trying to rebuild our lives. It’s not easy, but we feel a great closeness from our fellow citizens.” His constant thoughts are of his wife, who remembers nothing of the attack she suffered. The shock, as explained by the doctors, triggered a self-protection mechanism that prevents her from reliving that night: «The first ten days were a nightmare, permanent brain damage had not yet been averted. The wounds are slowly healing, we remain hopeful and waiting for her to leave the hospital”, concludes Robert Auer. AL.BO.
