While leading the table in the Spanish league and looking like a favorite to win the championship, Real Madrid won another title tonight (Sunday) after beating Athletic Bilbao 0-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final, in a match held at King Fahd Stadium in Saudi Arabia. Luca Modric scored a wonderful goal, Karim Benzema doubled from the penalty spot and Thibaut Courtois finished off with an impressive save to Raul Garcia’s penalty.
After the 2: 3 over Barcelona in the semi-final, Real Madrid knew they had crossed the big hurdle but Athletic Bilbao did not intend to be a backdrop in the final. The first half was not too impressive and the magic moment came in the 38th minute, when Luca Modric scored his first goal of his career against the Basques, when he sent a wonderful ball into the net of Onai Simon.
The second half opened well for the Blancos and in the 52nd minute Karim Benzema squeezed a penalty kick from 11 meters and scored himself on the way to 0: 2. For the French striker Bilbao is the preferred rival, as he has scored 18 goals against them during his career, more than any other opponent against whom he has played. After the double advantage Real slightly took a foot off the gas and the Basques came forward.
Raul Garcia, who came in as a substitute, came up with a number of opportunities to shrink the result. In one of them, in the 86th minute, the VAR system detected a clear hand touch from Adar Militau, which prevented a safe goal. The referee issued a red card to the Brazilian stopper’s duty and Garcia approached the white spot. The midfielder, who last season scored a double and ousted Real Madrid in the factory semi-final, kicked to the center and squeezed an impressive save from Tibo Courtois. In the end, Real Madrid celebrated with 0: 2 and winning the first title of the year.
